Strict adherence to your prescribed medication regimen is critical for preventing infection, managing discomfort, and ensuring the smooth, beautiful healing of your delicate eyelid tissues. This guide explains how to use your prescriptions safely and effectively.
Understanding Your Medications
Your surgical team will provide specific prescriptions tailored to your procedure. Below is a detailed overview of the most common types.
Antibiotics (Oral)
Purpose: To prevent bacterial infection.
- Take exactly as directed (e.g., twice daily).
- Finish the entire course, even if you feel fine.
- Take with food if nausea occurs.
Antibiotic Ointment
Purpose: Local infection prevention & wound moisture.
- Apply a thin layer along the incision lines.
- Usually applied 3 times daily or as directed.
- Keep the wound moist to prevent crusting.
Lubricating Drops
Purpose: Relief from dry, gritty, or irritated eyes.
- Use Preservative-Free drops only.
- Apply every 1–2 hours as needed for comfort.
- Essential as your tear film adjusts post-surgery.
Pain Management
Purpose: Discomfort control.
- Take prescribed narcotics only for severe pain.
- Switch to Acetaminophen (Tylenol) as pain lessens.
- DO NOT use Ibuprofen/Aspirin (increases bleeding).
How to Apply Eye Medications
Following these steps maintains sterility and ensures the medication reaches the target area without irritating the eye.
Wash Your Hands
Always wash thoroughly with soap and water before touching your face, drops, or ointment tubes.
Administer Eye Drops
- Tilt your head back gently.
- Pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Squeeze one drop into the pocket. Do not touch the dropper to your eye or skin.
- Close your eye for 1 minute; press gently on the corner near your nose.
Apply Ointment (If Used)
- Always apply drops *first*, wait 5 minutes.
- Pull down your lower eyelid or follow surgeon's instructions for incision application.
- Place a thin ribbon along the pocket or directly on the incision. Blurry vision is normal for a few minutes.
