Swelling & Bruising Management

Swelling and bruising are natural parts of the eyelid healing process. Following our structured protocol will help minimize tissue inflammation, reduce discomfort, and accelerate your overall recovery.

Compress Therapy Rules

Using temperature therapy correctly is crucial. Applying cold vs. warm compresses at the right stage makes a dramatic difference in your results.

Days 1 to 3 (First 72 Hours)

Cold Compresses

Constricts blood vessels to significantly reduce immediate swelling and prevent excessive bruising.

  • Frequency: Apply for 10–15 minutes every hour while awake.
  • Method: Use ice packs wrapped in a soft, clean towel or iced saline-soaked gauze.
  • Safety Warning: Never place raw ice directly on delicate eyelid skin or suture lines.
Day 4 Onwards (After Initial Swelling Peaks)

Warm Moist Compresses

Increases blood circulation to help break down residual bruising and relax tight tissues.

  • Frequency: Apply 3–4 times daily for 10 minutes at a time.
  • Method: Use a clean washcloth soaked in warm (not hot) water, lightly squeezed.
  • Safety Warning: Test the temperature on your wrist first to avoid thermal burns on fragile skin.

Lifestyle & Position Strategies

Small daily adjustments can prevent fluid pooling in your eyelids and speed up cellular repair.

Elevate Your Head

Sleep with your head elevated at a 30–45 degree angle using 2–3 pillows or a wedge pillow for the first 1–2 weeks. This prevents fluid from settling around your eyes overnight.

Reduce Sodium Intake

High salt levels trigger water retention, aggravating eyelid puffiness. Avoid processed foods, canned soups, and salty snacks during your first two weeks of recovery.

Hydrate & Natural Aids

Drink plenty of water to flush out fluids. You may ask your surgeon about natural anti-bruising supplements like Arnica Montana or Bromelain (pineapple extract).

Experiencing Asymmetrical Swelling?

It is very common for one eye to swell or bruise more than the other. Healing is rarely perfectly symmetrical!
