Wound & Suture Care Guide
Proper care of your surgical incisions and sutures is vital to prevent scarring, avoid infection, and promote seamless healing after eyelid surgery. Follow our step-by-step instructions below.
Daily Incision Cleaning Steps
Clean your eyelid incisions carefully twice a day (or as instructed) starting 24–48 hours after surgery.
Hygiene First
Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before touching your face or eyes.
Gentle Cleansing
Dampen a clean cotton swab (Q-tip) with sterile saline solution or warm boiled water. Gently dab—do not rub—along the suture line to remove crusts.
Apply Ointment
Using a fresh cotton swab, apply a thin layer of prescribed antibiotic ointment directly over the incision line to keep it moist.
Air Dry & Protect
Allow the ointment to absorb naturally. Do not place adhesive bandages or gauze directly over the eyelid stitches unless advised by your surgeon.
Suture Removal & Timeline
Eyelid skin heals remarkably fast. Depending on the technique used during your surgery:
- Removable Sutures: Typically removed in clinic 5 to 7 days post-surgery. The removal process is quick and virtually painless.
- Dissolvable Sutures: Gradually dissolve on their own over 1 to 2 weeks and do not require manual removal.
Normal Incision Appearance
During the first 1–2 weeks, it is completely normal to experience:
- Mild tightness or firmness along the incision.
- Slight redness, pinkness, or minor swelling around stitches.
- Light flaking as dead skin cells clear up during healing.
